Choose & Read is one of Coimbatore’s long-standing lending libraries, with a journey that began from a small book collection and evolved into a substantial physical library serving generations of readers. As reading habits shifted towards smartphones and digital convenience, the library wanted to make its extensive collection more accessible while preserving the physical-book experience at the heart of its business.

Before We Could Build the App, We Had to Understand the Library.
Choose & Read approached Hyrrokkin with a clear ambition: to make its lending library accessible through smartphones. But behind that seemingly simple requirement was a much larger operational challenge.
With 50,000+ books and 3,000+ members, years of library operations depended on an ageing local software system alongside manual records and working sheets. Book information needed to be reviewed and structured, duplicate and incomplete records had to be addressed, and activities such as rental tracking, reminders and delay-fee calculations involved significant manual effort.
The challenge wasn’t simply to replace old software with a new app.
It was to build a dependable digital foundation around a real, actively operating library.

- An ageing VB.NET-based local system that was no longer sufficient for the library’s future requirements.
- Operational information existed across software, spreadsheets and manually maintained records.
- Tens of thousands of titles needed to be organised and prepared for a modern digital catalogue.
- Historical records required review before they could become dependable application data.
- Several rental-related activities depended on staff calculations and manual follow-up.
- Members did not have a convenient digital way to discover books, track transactions or understand their rental activity.
- Digitisation had to happen while the physical library continued its everyday operations.

Our Approach
So We Built a Bridge Between the Old System and the New One.
Rather than waiting for the entire catalogue to be cleaned before application development could begin, Hyrrokkin divided the transformation into parallel workstreams.
We created a temporary, purpose-built data-entry system that allowed the Choose & Read team to begin organising and entering its book catalogue while our product team simultaneously designed and developed the new platform.
This allowed two difficult activities to move forward together:

Discover → Choose a Book → Buy or Rent → Delivery / Pickup → Payment → Track → Read → Keep or Return
From Business Logic to Wireframes
Before final interface development, the library’s processes were translated into structured user journeys and screen-level interactions. The wireframes covered book discovery, filtering, book details, rent and purchase options, cart, self-pickup or delivery, payments, credits and order confirmation – allowing complex library rules to be simplified before visual development.
From Physical Shelves to a Connected Digital Library
The completed platform gave Choose & Read a new way to connect its physical library with today’s smartphone-first readers.

Hyrrokkin’s role went beyond building Android and iOS applications. We helped translate a traditional lending-library model into a structured digital experience while allowing the character of the physical library to remain exactly where it belongs.
